Our Approach

Grow Communications Ltd is a fundraising and communications consultancy run by James and Jennie Spears, with regular in-house support from Lucy Timmins. Working alongside trusted freelancers, we specialise in fundraising, marketing and PR campaigns for clients across the UK, with a particular interest in the charity sector, the environment, and horticulture.

We have considerable experience building communications strategies and teams to deliver income, awareness and impact for people, communities, and the environment. We offer a friendly, down-to-earth approach to communications, working alongside your in-house team and other retained agencies, to strengthen your existing activity and create a culture in which effective communication is at the heart of your organisation.

James and Jennie Spears, Founders & Directors

James has over 18 years of fundraising knowledge and experience, working with trustees, senior managers, fundraising, administrative and services staff, as well as donors, corporate supporters, clients, and their families. He has a demonstrable track record of effectively driving growth and managing change for charitable organisations of all sizes and offers a wide range of supporter engagement services.

Jennie is an experienced and confident communications professional. She started her career in the press office at the Royal Horticultural Society, managing on-site PR teams at RHS flower shows and establishing science & horticulture PR within the charity, before becoming Head of PR and Media for the National Autistic Society where she worked for 3 years. A move to Bristol in 2006 to start a family prompted her to set up a freelance PR agency working with former RHS colleagues including Clare Johnson, with whom she still runs Bloom PR & Communications. With a background in horticulture and experience across gardening, lifestyle, environment, education and food and drink, Jennie specialises in strategic planning, crisis and reputation management and consumer-facing PR projects.

Lucy Timmins, PR & Marketing Executive

Lucy began her career at the BBC before moving into PR, marketing and events within the restaurant sector. Her passion for gardening led her to retrain in horticulture, gaining RHS Level 2 and 3 qualifications before becoming a senior and head gardener on large private estates. Today, she brings her combined love of gardens and communications to horticultural PR, blending industry insight, copywriting expertise and a keen eye for design.
